Report

Commentary

We welcomed Zorba777 back for his first on-time start in over two years, for this our third race of The Survival of the Fittest series. And if it hadn't been for Vida_Maldita sailing his socks off, Zorba would have shown us just how it's done. But second isn't half bad either for a rusty returnee, and to read more about how he did that, and how others couldn't quite match him and Vida, he has submitted a fine report, which you will find under the 19th seal of the islands - an image of HMS Hebe (which brought many of the early British settlers to the islands, including Richard Moody, in the 1840s) in Falkland Sound, overlooked by a bullock (representing feral cattle which once roamed the islands), according to Wikipedia.

So well done Zorba777 and very well done Vida_Maldita, and hard luck WRmirekd and bonknhoot, who trailed in behind them!

GPC Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race 2024

Once again Sailonline will be partnering with the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) to bring the Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race 2024 to armchair navigators around the world. This will be Sailonline’s seventh virtual B2G partnership with QCYC and we look forward to many more in the future.

Who can forget the fabulous commentary at the start of previous years’ B2Gs with the popular Nic ‘Adventures of a Sailor Girl’ Douglass. Once again Nic and the team will be back to livestream the start with expert commentary about all yachts in the race, weather, sea conditions and likely favourites.

The virtual race starts at the same time as the real race on Good Friday, 29th March 2024 at 11:00am local time (0100 UTC) in the waters of Moreton Bay off Brisbane.

As usual, the 308 nautical mile ocean classic will start off Shorncliffe, a bayside suburb of Brisbane. The yachts proceed from Shorncliffe Pier to a mark off Redcliffe so spectators can get a good view of the fleet before they head east across the bay to a mark off Tangalooma, Moreton Island; then through the North West Channel out to the open ocean, around the top of K’gari (Fraser Island) and Lady Elliot Island and then west across ‘The Paddock’ to the city of Gladstone.

Entrants will include some of the country’s best racing yachts such as the Botin 100 ‘Wild Thing 100’ and three TP52s, Sydney to Hobart winner ‘Celestial’, ‘Maritimo 52’ and ‘Ocean Crusaders J-Bird III’, as well as a number of classic yachts such as the sail training schooner ‘South Passage’ and the 30 Square Metre Skerry ‘Spetsig’.

“Celestial” - picture Doyle Sails

The virtual B2G24 boat will be Sailonline’s TP52 so participants will be able to test their navigational skills against one of the race favourites, ‘Celestial’, the other TP52s and other yachts in the 50-55 ft range.

In cooperation with the race’s tracker provider, YB Tracking, Sailonline will overlay the fleet on its virtual racing screen so we can see how we are competing against the ‘real’ fleet.

Sailonline's virtual race will open for registration on Friday 22nd March 2024 to allow ample time to practise and get to know the Sailonline interface.

In an exhilarating collaboration with the San Diego Yacht Club, Sailonline hosted the annual Islands Race, spanning 140 nautical miles of fantastic racing! From Long Beach to San Diego, our SOLers navigated the captivating Catalina Islands in their Melges 40s, battling both the elements and each other!

Our SOLers had the amazing opportunity of competing head-to-head against the real fleet, infusing the virtual waters with real-world intensity! Amidst tricky wind conditions demanding precise navigation, Vida_Maldita of Brazil showcased mastery, seizing victory with strategic brilliance. Hot on their heels was WRmirekd of Poland to secure second place, while bonknhoot of the Netherlands navigated skillfully to claim the final spot on the podium.

Sailonline extends a heartfelt thank you to the San Diego Yacht Club for their fantastic collaboration in making this race a true adventure for our SOLers!

Casey Station to Neumayer Station 2024

It’s late summer now in Antarctica, the sun will still not set, but the Emperor chicks are hatched. Let’s yacht on from Australia’s Casey Station, destination Germany’s Neumayer Station! Our route takes us past Molodezhnaya Stancija, Russia’s self-styled capital of Antarctica, as well as Mirney (RUS), Davis (AUS), Mawson (AUS), Syowa (JAP) and Maitri (IND) down the full length of the continent’s east coast. It’s not much more than 2600nm, so let’s take Brazil’s Amyr Klink’s more stately and very comfortable 29m LOA Paratii 2 for this second leg of our six-leg high latitude adventure!
