  • sol and guest suggestions
    Board » General Discussion
Before I leave SailonLine race and forum a couple of suggestions:

    - get the sol-boat in every race out of the water the moment you open the race for registration.
At least disable input of steering commands; directly or via dc's in all clients. Disable dc's in general. be it in brainaids dc-editor, autogribloader or etc.
Very maybe you could just restore sol to the 'community-boat' it once was.

    - Get rid of the guest-account or elevate the guest-account to full operational status.

    - Give only SYC-members the 'right' to contribute to the forum.

    - Construct a document that tells how hmm gets his information of positions of boats;
how in 'autogribloader' a solgrib is available withoud using brainaids toolbox.
You do not have to teach programmming in it.. but if information is publicly available then tell how and where to find it.

    Bye.

I'm trying to understand what 'simplifying' means. If it's deleting poi's that are within a certain margin not leading to a different heading then indicated by the surrounding poi's then this simplifying would just cause less poi's. This is not the same as a decreased ETA. If you then optimize these simplified poi's series I can imagine that this optimization of 'errors' brought in by the simplification again can do unexpected things with ETA.

Why would you try to 'simplify' JB.
Could you not first 'optimize' and then 'simplify' the exported csv by yourself?
deleting same TWA's and or same headings?

I'm trying to get a better understanding of what a router does. Hence these questions.

I have the same "happening". I thought it was something new in windows 10. But maybe it's just something new in qtvlm because it only happens after the last update. (Which version i do not know. :( )

I could not find a good way of handling this annoyance. I keep searching and will post when I found something.

I did install qtvlm in d:\qt\. works nice.
So you could install in \race1
    \race2
    \race3 etc.
If you are short in drive/disk space maybe this is not a good option. About 500 MB needed for every installation.

If you want to route more races at the same time then you have to consider how much your cpu/processor can take. If your computer gets terribly slow or qtvlm crashes then you know you excecuted one task too much...
    alternatives?:
    - In the same instance of qtvlm you could change the polar of your boat if you would start routing for a new race.... then stop the nmea-proxy for the old race and start the new one.. deleting "old" routes help to avoid confusion around which route is going to where.

    - In the qtvlm folder are only 4 files that change with every routing.
You could try to put these files in a race1 folder/map.
You should make a map for every race you want to route.

If after six hours you return to race1 just copy the files from race1 to their original places and you should be ready to go.
    files to copy
    boatAccReal.dat
    poiReal.dat
    qtVlm.ini
    traceSave.comp

I did not try this alternative till now.
But will give it a go when/if I do more races at th same time.

For use in BWR you can unzip the .bz2 file.
there you will find the .grb

'zig-zag' reminds me of BWR suggestions to sail for an hour 20 degrees to the wind... Always it was the router that within the time-limits it calculated the route could not find a tack-solution..

when I look into the qtvlm course I see many very small zig-zags where the routing comes with twa 144 and 10 minutes later twa -144 and again 10 minutes later twa 144. (gybes here)

Maybe playing with the time-setting/reckoning will help?

CA 500 2024

In 2019, the organisers of the California Race Week introduced a new longer distance event for the world’s very largest maxi trimarans in town that year intent on setting new records for the TransPac Ocean Race on its 50th anniversary. This CA 500, 500nm from San Francisco to San Diego, was repeated in 2023, but this year it will be an online only event, as it is a lot more straightforward to get a fleet of Maxi trimarans out on the virtual water, than in real life.

Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
